Big Lots Q1 Sales Fairly Flat

Big Lots reported sales for the first quarter ended May 2 slipped 0.8% to $1.1 billion. Comps declined 0.5%.
"While sales trends in our home and seasonal categories improved in the first quarter compared to the results of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2008, comparable store sales remained below last year," the company reported.
Best performing categories were consumables, furniture and hard lines.
Big Lots will report full operating results May 28.
