Fabricut Unveils Mt. Vernon and Trend Lines

New Line to Debut at High Point Market

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 10/2/2006 12:00:00 AM

Tulsa, Okla. — Decorative fabrics supplier Fabricut will launch a major program as a licensee of Mt. Vernon, the home of George and Martha Washington.

The fabric program will make its debut at the High Point market in North Carolina later this month, joining the major furniture launch at the same time by Kindel, the high-end furniture company that will use the fabrics on its products.

The fabric collection of about 150 skus “is truly an American story. The fabrics are indicative of what the Washingtons were all about,” Fabricut ceo David Finer remarked.

Howard Baratz, Fabricut vp, who was responsible for bringing the collection together, commented, “George Washington was truly a man of the world. His influences were worldwide.” As Baratz and Julia Rodriguez, the Fabricut stylist who was the design force of the collection, explained, “We found ourselves going for ethnic looks that surprised us.”

The fabric designs were inspired by all parts of the house and the outdoors, Baratz said. “Carvings, windows, dentils, ceiling plaster, the gardens, the china collection.” He added, “Washington truly was an unusual person with many interests — an inventor, architect, agronomist.”

The collection includes prints, silks and upholstery fabrics, and will be shown in the company's interior designer showrooms across the country as well as in four color books. Included in the color palette are reds, parchment, blue/gray, and a “cooler than usual taupe,” Rodriguez related.

Among the other licensees for the Mt. Vernon Collection are Wildwood for lamps and accessories, York for wall coverings, Charles Sadek Import Co. for porcelain giftware, and Kentucky Wood Floors.

In another major launch, Fabricut is introducing Trend, a new division that is focused “on a void below the looks, quality and price points of our existing divisions,” Finer explained. The company currently has Vervain, its high-end niche division; S. Harris, its broad-based high end; and Fabricut, the main upper-end decorator business. “It became clear as we shopped the market; we moved our customer base and market up. It left a void below, and that market needed more sophisticated color books.”

Trend will offer 29 books in the launch collection; 19 began distribution in September, with the balance to be distributed this month. “These will be completely different from our color books — they are type or category books — stripes, chintz, go-alongs, upholstery, for example,” Finer said.

Most price points are in the single digits, Finer said. Distribution will be handled by the Fabricut sales reps as well as through an inside telemarketing campaign.
